Our Publicly Funded Campaign
In 2023, the Anne Arundel County Council voted to create a public finance option for County Council elections and become a leader in amplifying the voices of residents over large, corporate donors.
We’ve all seen the effects of corporations and big money donors on our politics. Public financing is another way we can stand up at the local level and fight for what matters – fair, transparent and open elections that focus on residents and democratic values.
Public Financing is a proven system that has been used by both Democrats and Republicans. For example, former Governor Larry Hogan used public finance to run and win his first term as Governor.
How It Works
Candidates that participate in the Public Finance system agree to only take money from individuals and each donation is limited to $250 or less.
Qualifying candidates receive public matching funds based on the number and amount of small dollar donations they receive from county residents.
Candidates for County Council are eligible to receive matching public funds when they receive at least 75 qualifying contributions; and raise an aggregate total of at least $7,500.
These requirements ensure that only candidates with a broad base of community support are able to receive public funds.
While donations can be accepted from any individual, only those from Anne Arundel County Residents qualify for matching funds.
